Office Blues

white coat, blue skirt, blue statement necklace

The first day of Spring was Friday and we were welcomed with unexpected snowfall.  Oh winter, I'm ready for you to go.  In any case, I'm also ready to not worry about wearing tights with my skirts and feeling the sunshine on my face.  I know it will be soon, I can feel it!

Before the snow fell, I did get to sneak in a tight-less outfit to the office.  It is very easy to get stuck in a wardrobe rut when it comes to work.  Sometimes you become so used to pairing the same button down with the same skirt that your morning apparel selections quickly become routine.  Actually, that simple skirt can be dressed up with just one small change.  I pulled out multiple tops from my closet to see what else could go well with this Tahari skirt.  For this outfit, I found a BCBG long sleeved lace top in a similar blue color palette that really transformed the skirt and created an outfit that could transition from the office to drinks with friends afterwards.

Blue and gray tones go so well with many colors but I chose to put them together for this outfit.  I wore this light lace top and a matching pencil skirt with a crisp white coat by Jack by BBDakota.   Also, I paired it with grey heels and a blue statement necklace.  All it takes is another look at what you have already sitting in your closet to take a simple skirt and elevate it.  This turned out to be one of my favorite office looks.  How do you dress up your work skirts?

Have a great week,

Andrea

Rocksbox Rocks!!!

rocksbox monthly subscription RBItgirl

I hope everyone enjoyed their St.  Patricks day and had a safe evening if you headed out on the town.   I went with a casual look and let my accessories from Rocksbox be the main attraction.  Rocksbox is now one of the best decisions I have made.  For those or you that are unfamiliar with Rocksbox, it is a jewelry subscription service that sends you three pieces of designer jewelry for you to wear for as long as you like.  When you are ready, return the jewelry with the prepaid label and receive another set.  You can hold on to a set for as long as you like and also have the option of purchasing any piece.

I just started my subscription with them and I am already a huge fan.  It perfectly fits into my plan to reduce the amount of excess in my life.  In the past few weeks, I have been reading more about living a minimalist lifestyle and how it doesn't necessarily mean living without but living with what is necessary for each person to live their own meaningful life.  I am definitely not close to living a minimalist lifestyle but I have decided to remove all the clutter I have been neatly organizing (ahem...hoarding) in my apartment.  I've realized I don't need so much of just about everything.  I always held on to items "just in case."  Now I don't even know when "just in case" will be so its time to toss the junk and donate the rest.

With Rocksbox, not only am I reducing the amount of items in my home but I get the opportunity to enjoy so many great pieces as often as I like.  I like variety and Rocksbox has a wish list where I can add items that I would like to be sent to me with future sets.  This allows me to try a variety of styles from the statement necklaces to dainty bracelets.  I highly recommend it and for all my readers, for a limited time, you can get a one month free subscription with my code "astoriainheelsxoxo".

I hope you enjoy it as much as I do,

Andrea

Over the Knee Boots

printed jeans black and white jeans

The weather is finally changing!  It was a brutal winter but I know we are all on our tippy toes anxiously waiting for those sunny days where we won't have to be bundled up anymore.  We've been teased with a lovely sunny day in the 50's this week but now it lingers in the 40's.  I'll take it, anything is better than the frigid temperatures we had this year.

Fortunately, it allows me to still wear my over the knee boots.  Perfect for the weather as they are not just stylish but add an extra layer of warmth.  I'm also loving prints right now.  Definitely trying to get my hand on a few pairs of printed pants.  They are just so much fun!  This pair is printed denim from 7 For All Mankind that are so soft and comfortable.  Once again, for all you petite sized women, I purchased the cropped denim and they fit at the very top of my ankle.  No more buying regular jeans that will always need to be altered, unless I want the extra length to fold them, of course.  Its still cold outside so this cashmere sweater keeps me warm until it warms up more.

Any color top would work well with these jeans and I chose blue today.  Blue goes well with everything and is a great contrast against the black and white print of these jeans.  I also added a blue plaid infinity scarf to round out the outfit.  I purchased this warm scarf at Prima Donna in Astoria.  This store has a wide selection of scarfs and I can always find exactly what I need there for every season.   So go ahead, throw on a pair of over the knee boots, printed jeans, and any color top you like and enjoy your weekend!

Andrea

Astoria Finds: Il Fornaio Cafe Bakery

Astoria cafe astoria bakery

In Astoria, there are so many bakeries but I have zoned in on my favorite one, here in this post.  Just located down the street from me at 29-14 30th avenue is Il Fornaio Bakery Cafe, a one stop shop for your bakery, deli, dessert and catering needs.  Not only does this small corner shop handle so many items, they do each one insanely well! You will find mouth-watering deli sandwiches, fresh baked bread, and everything to fulfill your sweet tooth craving.

I wandered into this bakery when I first moved to Astoria.  I used to work from home so I would always try to find great spots to grab a quick bite to eat for lunch.  I love deli sandwiches, I grew up having turkey sandwiches for lunch and still love them.  At Il Fornaio, they have fresh ingredients to make whatever tasty sandwich you would like.  I always get turkey on a croissant!  Now for your sweet cravings, they have cupcakes, cookies, fresh filled cannolis, tres leches cups and red velvet cake, just to name a few.  They also have adorable mini cakes, just in case you don't feel like over indulging.

Another great aspect about Il Fornaio is that they have so many treats which makes it the best place to stop at before heading to a friend or family's home for a dinner party.  You can pick up a variety of cookies and cakes that will surely impress any hostess.  I bought the red velvet cake to take to a friends barbecue as well as to a birthday party.  Both times, everyone agreed that it was the best red velvet cake they had ever had.  That is what led me to order my wedding cake from them.  Yes, they also do custom orders!  They are so hospitable and worked with me to help me design my perfect wedding cake.  The best part is that they are completely budget friendly.  I had the perfect wedding cake without breaking the bank.  Their prices are beyond reasonable and I would highly recommend anyone looking for a wedding cake to order from Il Fornaio.  My 1st anniversary is coming up and I am looking forward to cutting into the top layer we saved!

I hope you will enjoy this bakery as much as I do!

Snowmaggeden

winter jacket beige winter jacket down jacket

Is it over...all the snow?  I certainly hope so.  This winter has definitely worn me out, as pretty as it may be, it was way too cold!  Finally, we have reached temperatures in the 40's...woohoo!!!  Spring is coming!  Luckily, as soon as I moved here, I was paranoid about the winter and not having the proper jacket so I quickly bought as many warm jackets as I could find, knowing that they would, one day, come in handy.

In the winter, I definitely tend to dress more casual as its so much work to get dolled up when you have to trek through the snow and sludge.  These black pants from 7 For All Mankind were on heavy rotation this winter.  I paired it with everything in my closet.  They are comfortable and versatile and the gold zippers add a little pizzazz.  As for sweaters, this beige one from H&M is so comfortable and more importantly, warm!  I love these sweaters that have the cowl neck attached, making it even easier to stay warm.  Keeping with the neutral tones, I wore this BCBG jacket that is incredibly insulated.  I purchased this jacket many years ago when I first started to visit New York in the winter months.  It has lasted me a long time and always comes through in these frigid days!

Suits

red bathing suit red one-piece

I am so sorry for such a huge delay in my posting!  I went down to Trinidad for vacation and as soon as I got back into town, I got sick and was at the end of my busy period at work.  But I am finally feeling better and we have completed our year end process at work.  Unfortunately, the busy period is going to start for the 1st Quarter very soon but in the mean time, I plan to get back on track with my blogging and pray for spring weather to come as quickly as possible!

I went to Trinidad for the yearly Carnival that takes place every Monday and Tuesday preceding Ash Wednesday.  This is similar to the Carnival in Brazil but people from all over are able to take part in the parade itself.  Tens of thousands of costumed revelers take to the streets of the capital, Port of Spain, decked out in elaborate costumes wining (gyration of the hips) to soca and calypso music.  Even before the parade, starting from the day after Christmas, parties or "fetes" take place almost everyday until Carnival Monday.  It is the greatest party on Earth!

One such party that led up to the grand celebration was named "Suits".  This was a morning boat ride with music and drinks at 7am!  Everyone comes out in their cutest bathing suit, hence the name, and brings a cooler with their favorite "beverage"  I had so much fun starting my vacation with friends and family on a sunny day out in the Caribbean Sea dancing for hours.

I picked up this red one-piece while in Miami for Christmas.  I stopped at the Shops at the Falls and went into Swim 'n Sport where I found a large selection of bathing suits and coverups.  They have such a wide selection of colors and styles at reasonable prices.  I tried on a few but was drawn to the color of this one.  Also, I've been wanting a one-piece and thought this would be the best time to wear one.  The cut was very flattering and I found this kimono that matched it perfectly.  Since I was going to be doing a lot of dancing, I sewed a tiny button at the bottom to keep it closed while on the boat.  The gold statement necklace and cuff finally completed the outfit and I was on my way to do some "wining"!
